Worth knowing

Wamda· Nov 2014

It is still bank lending: expect collateral or guarantee conversations, documentation, and a process shaped by credit risk rather than growth potential.

Bahrain's funding options ↗

What it actually is

  • •A government-owned bank whose whole mandate is lending to Bahraini SMEs that commercial banks find too small or too new.
  • •Facilities are structured Islamic finance products (murabaha, ijara and similar) rather than conventional interest loans.
  • •It also runs incubation and business-support arms, so financing often comes with advisory attached.

Who it's for

  • •Licensed Bahraini businesses with a CR, usually trading already or about to start operating.
  • •Founders buying equipment, fitting out premises or funding stock and receivables.
  • •Businesses that can show cash coming in, even modestly.

What they really look for

  • •Ability to repay, evidenced by bank statements, contracts or purchase orders.
  • •A clear, quotable use of funds — supplier quotations carry real weight.
  • •Personal and company credit standing with the Benefit credit bureau.
  • •Some security or guarantee, which may be personal for smaller facilities.

What the process looks like

  1. 1

    Enquiry and eligibility

    1 week

Branch or online enquiry, initial fit and product selection.

  2. 2

    Full application

    1–2 weeks

Financials, CR, quotations and supporting documents submitted.

  3. 3

    Credit assessment

    2–5 weeks

Credit bureau check, cash-flow analysis and site visit for some sectors.

  4. 4

    Credit committee

    2–4 weeks

Approval decision and structuring of the facility.

  5. 5

    Documentation and drawdown

    1–3 weeks

Signing, security registration and payment, often direct to the supplier.

What founders wish they'd known

  • →Money for equipment is usually paid straight to your supplier, not into your account — get formal quotations early.
  • →A messy personal credit record will sink an otherwise strong application; check it before you apply.
  • →Six months of clean business banking makes the difference between approval and 'come back later'.
  • →Ask about their Tamkeen-linked products — the two are often combined to reduce your cost.

What gets you rejected

  • ×No CR or an inactive commercial registration.
  • ×Defaults or unresolved bounced cheques on record.
  • ×Requesting refinancing of existing personal debt.
  • ×No documented income and no contracts to point at.

Documents to have ready

  • CR and Memorandum of Association
  • CPR / passport of owners
  • Audited or management financial statements
  • 6–12 months of bank statements
  • Supplier quotations or contracts
  • Business plan with cash-flow projection
  • Lease agreement for premises, if applicable
